Robocol

An NFT Art Collection

by Asım Demirağ

CONCEPT

Probably one of the most cutting-edge issue of the design field is robotic design. On the other hand, approximately all design fields have basic design practices at the initial level. This project brings basic design and robot design together.

STATEMENT

The first article about this project had been published in May of 2017. Although this story text includes the original article, it can be looked at via Behance. (Click to read.)

Part I: Original Article

Rules, Inspiration, and Basic Design...

After realizing a ruleset of a pretty good design, I thought of my own rules: Triangles, scaling, and rotation, then with inspiration I started to create simple graphics. First, it was too hard to have an eye-candy visual, until I started to think with basic design concepts. So this was the first good point:

Then, a friend told that some triangles could be put around the bottom left corners. So I thought it was still open to development and started to add triangles. In the end, I got this figure which was a torso of a man for me:

Finally, I decided to complete this man, here is the result:

Part II: Conceptualization

Four years later, I decided to continue my graphics studies. I’ve explained my relation with graphics art in the "About Me" section. When I look at what to do for several reasons I've chosen this project. For me, it would be a funny and easy process to accomplish the collection.

I always thought that this "man" is a robot actually. So the collection would be a robot collection. I created some categorization using robotic design and basic design:

Six missions: Production, Protection, Daily Affairs, Entertainment, Nature Care, and Commerce

Three functions: Dominant (Master), Subdominant (Worker), Subordinate (Supplier)

Two colors: On White and On Black

Using blacks more or making the design colored, is a basic design issue but functions are derived from the robotic design.

Regarding types: They have two names, for example, Dominant - Master. Here dominant, subdominant, and subordinate are basic design issues taught us by Rowena Reed Kostellow. You can check here (http://rowenafund.org/). On the other hand, the terms like "master", "worker" are used in some robotic design fields. So types category consists of two fields. So basic design and robotics come together with the function property.

And, 2 x 3 x 6 gives us 36 pieces that attempt to express their categories. One of them has a dominant character from the original article. Then I drew five examples very quickly on paper. And it is this:

Part III: Why Do I Do?

When I decided to return to my graphical studies, that was because firstly I love it, and secondly, I could create a good amount of free time in my professional life which is based on software development.

I love creating and applying processes. For example, creating or choosing some rules and apply them many times, like "using triangles".

I have already been doing NFTs projects, as a dApp developer, so thinking of producing art for NFTs worlds was not unfamiliar to me. So that’s what I did ☺

Even though I state here the main dynamics, there are many artistic decisions that are waiting to come to your attention. Please find them and have fun

ABOUT ME

Born in 1983 April. Using technologies such as computers since 1987. My education includes Galatasaray High School and Istanbul Bilgi University, Visual Communication Design. I lived in Italy for one year accomplishing 2nd class of the high school. I got the profession of software programming in Galatasaray High School, and I met academic graphics design at university.

My father was a painter and graphic designer too. So I met with many aspects of visual design when I was a child, like meeting with technology. As a son of a mathematics teacher (my mother), I've always seen many aspects of life have the same common points. I filmed some short movies and I presented a few improvisated piano concerts. I think, being versatile is a paramount aspect of a beautiful life.

Being also a dApp developer, I would like my future to possess more collections, maybe games on digital platforms. I've already begun to think about my next collection. As a spoiler, we will have some curves!

How to Buy

Because of the 600 limit of the card minting, WAX system does not allow putting these NFTs in a package. So their sales are individual basis.

Drop pages are packed into 6 mission categories of robots.
